I think we’re still operating on the typist mantality on the web today – while we constantly condemn typographic abominations like prime marks where there should be apostrophes and double hyphens where there should be en-dashes, why are we doing all these things on the web? Yes, even typographers are doing it.

Hello, and ‘gong xi fa cai’, or, if you speak Cantonese, ‘gong hei fat choi’! It’s new year’s eve today according to the Chinese lunar calendar, and I wish you prosperity for the new year. And, it’s the year of the sheep! (Well, strictly speaking, it should be the ram really. But people have been calling it sheep in recent years, probably because a sheep is cuter than a ram? As a typographer I much prefer the sheep :-) Erik Spiekermann and E.M. Ginger’s new edition of Stop stealing sheep and find out how type works might just be the perfect new year gift? Here’s a review of it by John D. Berry on creativepro.

Gallery exhibitions: Hong Kong vernacular, first installment. Showing twelve video stills of vernacular typography/lettering/characters from Hong Kong I took in 2002. And... Who says Cooper is ugly? See it for yourself. Images from the Bernhart Brothers & Spindler specimen book c. 1931. Enjoy!

There is an online critique of my Arrival typeface at the Typophile web site. Please stop by and leave a comment or two!

Gerard Unger has a web site now. It’s filled with information about all his typeface designs and you can even purchase some of his fonts there! In the news section, Gerard talks about the ‘marriage’ of his Coranto and Vesta with Chinese types – I chose them for the identity of a Hong Kong publisher DG Press.

As you can see I’ve made some slight adjustments to the web site. This page is now a web log (I know, I know... there are too many of these around already) in which I’ll post updates and news about typography. There is now content in almost every section of this site – well, except the books section. I’ll post a book review or two by next week. Watch this space! I’ve been getting a fair bit of compliments about this site already – thanks. Some say it is austere. Maybe it is. My intention is to make everything as simple as possible – we have enough clutter on the web. I hope you enjoy it.
