Roman Wilhelm (aka Luo Xiao Di), a well-travelled German communication design student has just posted some beautiful images of his ‘typographic impressions from China’ in response to my Hong Kong vernacular images. Incendentally, he is currently working on some layouts for a German–Chinese book for his diploma project at the University of Art and Design in Halle, Germany. Speaking of crossing cultures, kankei culture is a design practice based in Vancouver which specializes in ‘internationally-minded design’. The word ‘kankei’ means ‘relationship’ in Japanese.

After reading Eric Gill’s startling biography by Fiona MacCathy, I’ve started working on a serif type inspired by Gill’s Perpetua. As beautiful as the digital cuts of Perpetua are set relatively large (notably Adobe and Monotype), I find them a bit too light and too contrasty on coated stocks, printed with offset litho, especially at text sizes. Surely that’s not what Eric Gill had intended? With this new type I’m trying to capture the essence of Gill’s original and reinvigorate it with its letterpress charm for use at text sizes. An initial rough sketch of several letters:
