Adobe Type
Not much introduction needed, I guess. All their fonts are now in
OpenType format, including some excellent Pro fonts with optical
sizes and essential typographical accessories. Their designers,
Robert Slimbach and Carol Twombly have created some of the best revivals
of the past decade or so such as Caslon and Garamond. There are also some
excellent original designs in their vast collection, including Minion,
Myriad and the most recent Warnock Pro.
FontShop
Founded by Erik Spiekermann. Their FontFont collection includes some of
the best Humanist sanserifs available.
The Enschedé Font
Foundry
From the Netherlands. Designs of Bram de Does, Jan van Krimpen and Gerrit
Noordzij among others can be found here. A beautifully designed web site.
Font Bureau
An all-American foundry founded by David Berlow and Roger Black. My personal
favourites include Tobias Frere-Joness Interstate (modelled after
the US highway typeface, immensely successful), Matthew Carters
Miller (a Scotch Roman face for newspapers) and Petr van Bloklands
Proformer.
Dutch Type Library
Another Ducth type foundry. Some of the best contemporary typefaces are
here. Gerard Ungers Paradox and Argo, and Frank E. Bloklands
Documenta are my favourites, among others.
Storm Type Foundry
Frantisek Storm is the ower of this Czech type foundry. Check out their
Baskerville and its related sans (!), John Sans.
Underware
From The Hague, the Netherlands. They have some rather fun typefaces.
The web site also shows work of students from a type design workshop.
Tiro Typeworks
John Hudson and Wm Ross Mills are the figures behind this Vancouver-based independent type foundry. They produce elegent revival designs and their 1530 Garamond is of particular interest.
Typotheque
Typotheque is an independent type foundry based in The Hague, the Nethelands, selling typefaces by Dutch type designer Peter Bilak. There are over 80 articles on typography on the site, including in interview with the Dutch type designer Martin Majoor.
